Tullamore D.E.W. Distillery
Tullamore D.E.W. Distillery is a state-of-the-art Irish whiskey production facility opened in 2014 at Clonminch, Tullamore, County Offaly — returning the brand to its home town after a gap of approximately 60 years. Owned by William Grant & Sons, the 58-acre Clonminch site is a fully integrated, grain-to-glass operation that mills, mashes, ferments, distils, matures, and bottles all on the same site, producing approximately 11 million litres of whiskey annually. The Tullamore D.E.W. brand itself traces its history to 1829 — nearly two centuries of continuous whiskey-making, making it one of Ireland's longest-lived distillery stories. Sales exceed 1.5 million cases per year, placing it among the most popular Irish whiskeys in the world.

History
The first distillery in Tullamore was established in 1829 by Michael Molloy in the market town of Tullamore, County Offaly. The brand's full name came from Daniel Edmund Williams — a man who joined the company in his teens, rose to become manager, then owner, and eventually the dominant force in Irish whiskey in the late 19th century. Williams' initials form the "D.E.W." of the brand name. Under his stewardship the distillery was transformed into a modern industrial operation: in 1893 Williams introduced both electricity and telephone service to the town of Tullamore, drawing on the distillery's resources.
The 20th century was catastrophic for Irish whiskey as a whole. The original Tullamore distillery, weakened by Prohibition (which closed the American market), the Anglo-Irish Trade War, and shifting consumer preferences, ceased production in 1954. Production of the brand moved first to John Powers & Son, then when Powers merged with other distilleries to form Irish Distillers in 1966, Tullamore D.E.W. became part of the new consolidated entity. C&C Group purchased the brand from Irish Distillers in 1994.
William Grant & Sons — the independent Scottish whisky company behind Glenfiddich and Balvenie — acquired the Tullamore D.E.W. brand in 2010 for €300 million, committing to return production to Tullamore. A new visitor centre opened in a refurbished bonded warehouse in the town centre in 2012. The purpose-built Clonminch distillery followed in 2014, ending the long absence of distilling from Tullamore and establishing one of the largest and most technologically advanced whiskey facilities in Ireland.
Production
The Clonminch distillery spans 58 acres and represents a complete end-to-end operation: grain milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation (both pot still and grain), maturation in 12 on-site warehouses, and bottling — all on a single site. Annual production is approximately 11 million litres of pure alcohol. The original Tullamore D.E.W. recipe is a blend of triple-distilled malt whiskey, single grain whiskey, and pot still whiskey — the three styles that characterise premium Irish blended whiskey. Single malt expressions for the 14 and 18 Year Old bottlings draw on pure pot still and malt whiskey stocks.
Tasting Character
Tullamore D.E.W. Original is the definition of accessible Irish whiskey: triple distilled, smooth, and versatile, with a gentle sweetness, light vanilla, and a subtle peppery warmth on the finish that invites sipping and mixing equally. The 12 Year Old blend adds more dried fruit and spice complexity while remaining smooth. The XO Caribbean Rum Cask finish introduces tropical fruit and a richer sweetness. The 14 Year Old Single Malt steps into more complex territory: honeyed orchard fruit, barley spice, and creamy malt character. The 18 Year Old Single Malt adds deeper dried-fruit and oak notes from the additional maturation. The Honey variant uses natural honey and is positioned as a gateway expression.
