Torabhaig Distillery
Torabhaig Distillery is the second ever licensed distillery on the Isle of Skye — the first to join Talisker since it was established in 1830, ending a monopoly of nearly 200 years. Situated in Teangue on the Sleat Peninsula (IV44 8RE), the distillery occupies a beautifully converted 18th-century farm steading built using stones from the ruins of the nearby Castle Camus. The building itself dates from around 1820, and the surrounding landscape — dramatic hillsides dropping to the Sound of Sleat — provides both the setting and the name for the distillery's signature expression. Owned by Mossburn Distillers, a subsidiary of Marussia Beverages BV, Torabhaig has been fully operational since January 2017 and produces 500,000 litres per year from one wash still and one spirit still.

History
The story of Torabhaig's revival begins in 2002, when Sir Iain Noble — a Skye landowner and passionate supporter of the Gaelic language and Highland culture — was granted planning permission to convert the Torabhaig farm steading into a distillery. Noble had long championed economic development on Skye through cultural and agricultural projects, and the distillery was conceived as both a commercial venture and a statement of Hebridean identity.
Sir Iain Noble died before the project could be realised. His estate passed the distillery project to Mossburn Distillers, the Scottish arm of Marussia Beverages BV — an independent bottler and spirits company with roots going back to 1992. Mossburn appointed architects Simpson and Brown, specialists in historic conservation, to carry out the conversion of the 1820 steading. Construction began in 2014; the estimated project cost exceeded £5 million. The distillery became fully operational on 21 January 2017.
The first whisky expression — the Legacy Series 2017 — was released in February 2021, with the Allt Gleann single malt following in the summer of 2021 (bottled at 46% ABV). In 2022 a Torabhaig whisky was selected for preservation by the National Museum of Scotland — a remarkable recognition for a distillery only five years old. The Legacy Series charts the evolution of the house style year by year as the whisky matures, with each chapter documenting the journey toward an eventual flagship aged expression.
Production
Torabhaig draws water from the Allt Gleann Thorabhaig and the Allt Breacach — two burns that flow from the Sleat hills into the Sound of Sleat. One wash still and one spirit still produce approximately 500,000 litres per year. The peating level of the malt is substantial — creating the signature Skye-inflected smoky character — while the distillery's unusually high cut point during distillation ensures a gentler, more refined smoke profile than is typical of heavily peated Islay malts. Traditional wooden washbacks and careful fermentation contribute to the fruity, complex new make. Maturation is in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks.
Tasting Character
Torabhaig's philosophy is "smoke with taste" — described as "Well-Tempered Peat." Rather than the medicinal, briny, heavily phenolic smoke of many Islay whiskies, Torabhaig delivers subtler woodsmoke and forest floor notes with a decidedly maritime but more gentle character. The high cut point preserves fruit and floral notes alongside the smoke:
Taigh ("home" in Gaelic) is the entry-level expression — gentle smoke, accessible, showing the lighter side of the house style.
Sound of Sleat digs deeper into the peat character while adding the maritime influence of the sea loch on the doorstep; available at standard strength and as a Batch Strength bottling.
Legacy Series documents the distillery's evolution across multiple annual chapters, each revealing how the spirit develops with additional maturation.
Ephemera Collection presents twelve ultra-limited releases from Mossburn's wider cask archives.
