Tamdhu Distillery
Tamdhu Distillery sits on the banks of the River Spey in Knockando, Moray, surrounded by some of Speyside's finest woodland. Founded in 1897 and owned by Ian Macleod Distillers since 2011, Tamdhu holds a singular distinction: it is the only Scotch whisky distillery to mature all of its production exclusively in 100% ex-Oloroso sherry casks. This absolute commitment to one cask type gives every expression in the range a coherent, unified character built on dried fruit, spice, and Christmas cake richness. The former Knockando railway station serves as the distillery's visitor centre, one of the most charming settings in Speyside.
Tamdhu operates three wash stills and three spirit stills, with an annual capacity of approximately 4.5 million litres — placing it among the mid-sized Speyside producers.

History
Tamdhu was founded in 1896 by a syndicate of investors who wished to engage directly in whisky production, with the first malt whisky distilled and casked on 21 July 1897. The renowned distillery architect Charles Doig was commissioned to design the facility. Alfred Barnard, who visited and wrote about Britain's distilleries in his landmark 1887 survey, described Tamdhu in his 1898 update as "perhaps the most efficient and best designed distillery of its era" — a remarkable endorsement for a newly built operation.
The distillery was mothballed between 1911–1912 and again through the difficult years of 1928–1947. During a 1950 rebuilding, Tamdhu installed Saladin box maltings — a mechanised alternative to traditional floor maltings that used conveyor belts in large rectangular steel boxes to turn the germinating barley. At their peak, Tamdhu's ten Saladin boxes (each holding 22 tonnes of malt) supplied malt to approximately 30% of the entire Highland Distillers Company portfolio, making the distillery as important as a malt supplier as it was as a whisky producer in its own right. The Saladin system has since been decommissioned and replaced with externally sourced malt, though the historic boxes remain as a heritage feature.
Tamdhu's primary blending role was supplying The Famous Grouse, J&B, and Cutty Sark before being mothballed again in 2010. Ian Macleod Distillers acquired the distillery in June 2011 for approximately £3 million and committed to a radical repositioning — relaunching Tamdhu as a single malt brand built entirely around Oloroso sherry cask maturation. Production recommenced in May 2013. The brand has since grown into one of Speyside's most acclaimed independent labels, celebrated for its consistency and the sherry-forward quality that distinguishes it in a crowded market.
Production
Tamdhu operates three wash stills and three spirit stills, producing approximately 4.5 million litres of pure alcohol per year. The exclusive use of ex-Oloroso sherry casks for maturation is a strict policy: no ex-bourbon, wine, or other wood types are used in the Tamdhu programme. Oloroso sherry casks are sourced from cooperages in Andalucía, Spain, where the sherry wine has been seasoned into the oak before the casks are emptied and sent to Scotland. The 16 on-site warehouses hold Tamdhu's maturing stock across dunnage and racked configurations.
Tasting Character
Tamdhu's exclusive Oloroso sherry cask programme produces a signature style of rich, dark, and dried fruit-forward single malt. Every expression in the core range reflects this consistently: notes of raisin, sultana, dark chocolate, Christmas cake spice, and toasted oak are the hallmarks. The 12 Year Old is the accessible entry point with gentle sweetness and fruit; the 15 adds greater dried fruit complexity and spice; the 18 deepens the dark fruit and warming oak character; the 21 Year Old — the oldest in the core range — delivers a luscious, multi-layered richness from extended time in Oloroso wood. Batch Strength releases present the spirit uncut at natural cask ABV, amplifying all of the above.
