Laphroaig Distillery is one of the most distinctive and polarising distilleries in Scotland, occupying a sheltered bay on the south coast of Islay, separated from Lagavulin by less than two miles. Founded in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston — descendants of Clan Donald who had anglicised their surname — the distillery was originally established as a farming concern before whisky production became its primary purpose.

Laphroaig (pronounced "La-froyg," from the Scottish Gaelic meaning "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay") produces one of the most intensely peated, medicinal, and iodine-tinged whiskies in the world. It is genuinely a love-it-or-loathe-it experience, and the distillery has embraced this division as part of its identity. The "Friends of Laphroaig" programme, launched in 1994, grants members a symbolic square foot of land near the distillery — collectible as a dram on each visit. It is reportedly the preferred whisky of HM King Charles III. Now owned by Beam Suntory (Suntory Holdings).

History

The Johnston family established the distillery in 1815 and operated it continuously until 1954, making it one of the longest family-managed distilleries in Scotch whisky history. The operation grew steadily through the 19th century and maintained its floor maltings as a point of distinction. In the 1960s ownership passed to Long John International; Whitbread acquired the company in 1973. Allied Domecq took control in 1989, followed by Fortune Brands in 2005. Beam Inc. merged with Suntory Holdings in 2014, and the distillery is now part of Suntory Global Spirits.

The Friends of Laphroaig programme was launched in 1994, creating a global community of engaged fans. Each member receives a symbolic lease on a one-square-foot plot of Islay land; on visiting the distillery they can "collect rent" in the form of a dram. In 2021 the programme was restructured to an annual tier system, maintaining the core land-lease concept. The annual Càirdeas (Gaelic for "friendship") limited edition has been produced exclusively for Friends members since 2008.

Production

Laphroaig operates three wash stills and four spirit stills, giving an annual production capacity of approximately 3,300,000 litres. Water is drawn from the Kilbride Dam on the island. The distillery maintains its own traditional floor maltings, which still account for approximately 10% of the total barley requirement; this malt is hand-turned and kiln-dried using hand-cut Islay peat, producing the distinctively creosote-like, phenolic character that characterises Laphroaig. The remaining 90% of malt is sourced externally from Port Ellen Maltings. Barley is peated to approximately 40–45 ppm phenols.

Tasting Character

Laphroaig is the quintessential love-it-or-hate-it whisky: aggressively medicinal, powerfully iodine-tinged, and smoky in a way that recalls a coastal pharmacy. Behind the bold front lies genuine complexity — peat bogs, heather honey, seaweed, brine, and a persistent sweetness that rewards patience. The 10 Year Old at 40–43% ABV is the benchmark: smoky, medicinal, and coastal at an accessible price, widely regarded as one of the best-value peated whiskies available. Quarter Cask adds vanilla richness and sweetness from maturation in smaller quarter casks that accelerate interaction. Lore is the fullest and richest expression of the Laphroaig character, drawing on several cask types. The annual Càirdeas varies by year — consistently among the distillery's most celebrated releases.
