Lagavulin Distillery
Lagavulin Distillery stands on the south coast of Islay, overlooking Lagavulin Bay and the spectacular ruins of the 14th-century Dunyveg Castle — once a stronghold of the Lords of the Isles. Officially founded in 1816 by John Johnston and Archibald Campbell Brooks, who constructed two distilleries on the site, the location had already seen illicit distilling in at least ten illegal operations as far back as 1742.
Owned by Diageo and part of the Classic Malts of Scotland collection, Lagavulin produces one of the world's most celebrated heavily peated single malts. The 16 Year Old is routinely cited as one of the greatest whiskies on earth — intensely smoky, richly complex, and unmistakably Islay. The distillery uses distinctively pear-shaped pot stills and an unusually slow distillation speed that contributes directly to its richly layered character.

History
Illicit distilling on the Lagavulin site dates to at least 1742. The first legal distillery was established in 1816 by John Johnston. In 1835 Johnston died and the operation passed through several owners before James Logan Mackie assumed control in 1856. His nephew Peter Mackie — later known as "Restless Peter" for his relentless commercial energy — joined the business in 1878 and established Mackie & Co. in the mid-1880s. Mackie is credited with elevating Lagavulin to international standing.
The separate Malt Mill distillery was built within the Lagavulin complex in 1908 and operated until 1962 — its stills now form part of the Lagavulin production capacity. Mackie & Co. became White Horse Distillers Ltd in 1924; the company joined Buchanan Dewar Ltd in 1923 and The Distillers Company in 1925. Guinness acquired The Distillers Company in 1986, and the 1997 merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan created Diageo, bringing Lagavulin into the world's largest spirits portfolio.
In the late 1980s, Diageo selected Lagavulin as one of the founding expressions in its Classic Malts of Scotland series, cementing the 16 Year Old as the benchmark heavily peated Islay malt and dramatically expanding the distillery's international profile.
Production
Lagavulin operates two wash stills of 11,000 litres each and two spirit stills of 12,500 litres each, giving an annual production capacity of approximately 1,400,000 litres. Water is drawn from the Solum Lochs on the island. The stills are distinctive pear-shaped pot stills, and distillation runs at a notably slow pace — a combination that forces maximum copper contact, removing sulphur and producing a spirit of unusual complexity. Barley is heavily peated, contributing the characteristic coastal smoke, iodine, and medicinal qualities for which Lagavulin is famous.
Tasting Character
Lagavulin is intensely peated, smoky, and rich — one of the two or three benchmark heavily peated Islay malts. The nose evokes a seaside bonfire: coal smoke, brine, and seaweed. The palate is deep and earthy — charred wood, tobacco, strong black tea, dried fruits, leather, and briny Islay notes all interweave. The 16 Year Old (43% ABV) is widely considered one of the world's finest expressions of mature Scotch whisky: the combination of heavy peat, rich complexity, and long soft finish is almost uniquely satisfying. The 8 Year Old, introduced for the bicentenary, shows the rawer, more energetic face of the same distillery character. The Distiller's Edition adds Pedro Ximénez sherry cask finishing for sweetness and dried fruit depth.
