Glenmorangie Distillery
Glenmorangie Distillery near Tain, Ross-shire, was founded in 1843 by William Matheson on the site of a brewery that had been operating since the 1730s. The name comes from the Gaelic for "glen of tranquillity," and the distillery lives up to it: set against the calm of the Dornoch Firth on the east coast of the Northern Highlands, it is a serene and confident operation. Famous across the industry for its exceptionally tall copper pot stills — at 8 metres (26 ft 3 in) the tallest in Scotland — and for pioneering the Extra Matured (wood-finish) technique in the 1990s. Glenmorangie has been Scotland's best-selling single malt almost continuously since 1983. Owned by LVMH (Moët Hennessy) since 2004.

History
William Matheson, a former manager at Balblair Distillery, founded Glenmorangie in 1843, converting a brewery that had occupied the Tarlogie site since at least the 1730s. He selected the location for its access to the pure Tarlogie Springs water source and the ideal coastal microclimate for maturation.
Macdonald and Muir, a Leith-based firm, purchased the distillery in 1918 and the Macdonald family retained control for approximately 90 years. During this long period of stable family ownership, Glenmorangie built its reputation as Scotland's favourite single malt through consistent quality and progressive marketing. A famous piece of marketing mythology was born around the "Sixteen Men of Tain" — the original distillery workforce — later updated to "The Men of Tain" as staff numbers grew past 24.
The pivotal innovation came in the 1990s when Glenmorangie pioneered the wood-finish category, launching a series of Extra Matured expressions that underwent secondary maturation in specialist wine and spirit casks. This approach — now common throughout the industry — was revolutionary at the time and established Glenmorangie as a pioneer of cask experimentation.
In 2004 LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) acquired Glenmorangie for approximately £300 million, placing it alongside Ardbeg in the French luxury conglomerate's spirits portfolio. The distillery expanded significantly post-acquisition and now operates 12 stills (6 wash, 6 spirit) with an annual capacity of 6.5 million litres.
Production
Water comes from the Tarlogie Springs in the Tarlogie Hills behind the distillery — a source William Matheson identified in 1843 as essential to the spirit quality, and still in use today. The distillery's defining physical characteristic is its stills: at 8 metres high (26 ft 3 in) with 5.1-metre necks, they are the tallest pot stills in Scotland. This extreme height means the heavier congeners cannot travel up the column to the condenser, falling back down for re-distillation and producing an exceptionally elegant, light, and floral spirit. Glenmorangie operates 12 stills in total (6 wash stills, 6 spirit stills), with annual capacity of 6.5 million litres. Primary maturation uses American white oak ex-bourbon casks; the Extra Matured range undergoes secondary finishing in sherry, port, Sauternes, and other specialist casks.
Tasting Character
Glenmorangie's house style is elegant, complex, and perfumed: citrus (orange blossom, lemon), stone fruit (peach, apricot), vanilla, and delicate florals as the hallmark. The Original 10 Year Old is fresh and summery — the ideal introduction to the style. Lasanta (12 Year, sherry cask) adds dried fruit, chocolate orange, and warmth. Quinta Ruban (14 Year, port cask) brings deep dark berry, chocolate, and minty spice. Nectar d'Or (12 Year, Sauternes cask) is uniquely honeyed and luscious with citrus and spice. Signet, made using a proportion of chocolate malt and matured in heavily charred oak, is rich, deep, and unlike any other Glenmorangie expression.
