The GlenAllachie Distillery
The GlenAllachie Distillery stands at the foot of Ben Rinnes at Aberlour, Speyside, founded in 1967 by Mackinlay McPherson and designed by W. Delme Evans — the same architect responsible for Jura and Tullibardine. Since its acquisition in October 2017 by The GlenAllachie Distillers Company — led by legendary whisky maker Billy Walker, alongside Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson — the distillery has undergone a radical transformation, becoming one of Scotland's most acclaimed independent whisky producers. The IWSC recognises GlenAllachie as one of its Top 50 spirits producers worldwide.
GlenAllachie operates at reduced capacity of approximately 500,000 litres per year (from a potential 4 million litres), with an extended 160-hour fermentation and slow, deliberate distillation — a quality-over-quantity approach that has driven the brand's rapid rise. Sixteen on-site warehouses hold more than 50,000 casks representing decades of accumulated stock.

History
GlenAllachie was built in 1967 by Mackinlay McPherson, a subsidiary of Scottish & Newcastle Breweries, during the 1960s expansion boom driven by growing US demand for Scotch whisky. W. Delme Evans designed the facility in his characteristic functional style — the same architect who had created the Jura and Tullibardine distilleries. The spirit was designed to be light and delicately fruity, ideal for the blending requirements that drove construction.
In 1985 Invergordon Distillers mothballed the distillery as demand for blending spirit softened. Campbell Distillers purchased it in 1989 and restarted production, using the spirit primarily for Clan Campbell and other blended Scotch brands. When Pernod Ricard acquired Campbell Distillers (through their Chivas Brothers business), GlenAllachie continued contributing spirit to premium blends without significant public profile.
That changed decisively in 2017. Billy Walker — formerly Managing Director of BenRiach, where he had built a celebrated multi-award-winning single malt programme from nothing — identified GlenAllachie as an undervalued gem with exceptional stocks and physical infrastructure. Chivas Brothers agreed to sell, and The GlenAllachie Distillers Company completed the acquisition in October 2017.
Walker immediately reduced production volume and extended fermentation times to maximise spirit complexity. He also engaged in an ambitious cask acquisition programme, amassing an "unrivalled inventory of casks from around the world" including Mizunara virgin oak, American virgin oak, Oloroso Sherry, Pedro Ximénez Sherry, Port, and wine casks. A £600,000 visitor centre upgrade was completed in June 2023. In 2024 the distillery introduced a new visual identity under the "whisky in good hands" slogan.
The company also produces and manages MacNairs (blended malt), White Heather (blended Scotch), and the peated single malt Meikle Tòir.
Production
GlenAllachie operates two lantern-shaped wash stills and two onion-shaped spirit stills. Water comes from spring-fed and snowmelt-fed streams on the north-east slopes of Ben Rinnes. Despite a potential capacity of 4 million litres, the distillery currently operates at approximately 500,000 litres per year to prioritise quality. The extended 160-hour fermentation — significantly longer than the industry standard of 48–72 hours — produces a complex, ester-rich wash before distillation, contributing to the layered fruit and floral character in the new make spirit. Sixteen warehouses hold over 50,000 casks on site.
Tasting Character
GlenAllachie is known for rich, bold, and sherried single malts with exceptional wood management. The 10-year-old showcases a honeyed, fruity Speyside character with gentle spice; the 12-year-old deepens this with notes of dark chocolate, dried fruit, and toasted oak; the 15-year-old reaches into a more complex profile shaped by Billy Walker's diverse cask inventory. The Wood Collection expressions explore the outer limits of what different cask types can do to the GlenAllachie spirit — Mizunara oak delivers sandalwood and Japanese incense; Pedro Ximénez adds syrupy fruit and espresso richness; Rioja wine casks introduce red berry and vanilla.
