Craigellachie Distillery stands on a rocky hill in Speyside overlooking the confluence of the rivers Fiddich and Spey, between Rothes and Dufftown. The distillery's name comes from the Gaelic for "rocky hill" — an apt description of its dramatic setting. Founded in 1891 by Alexander Edward and the Craigellachie Distillery Co., it has earned a fierce reputation as one of Speyside's most distinctive and deliberately unconventional malts: robust, meaty, and sulphurous where its neighbours tend toward light and floral. Owned since 1998 by John Dewar & Sons, a subsidiary of Bacardi, Craigellachie produces one of the region's most characterful and talked-about single malts, beloved by whisky enthusiasts precisely because it refuses to conform.

History

Craigellachie Distillery was founded in 1891 by the Craigellachie Distillery Co. Limited, established by Alexander Edward, during the late-Victorian whisky boom that saw much of the Speyside infrastructure built in a single decade. It was incorporated as a limited company in 1893 and reconstructed as Craigellachie-Glenlivet Distillery Ltd in 1896 to keep pace with demand.

In 1916 the distillery passed to Peter Mackie — the flamboyant figure behind White Horse Distillers — adding it to his portfolio of Speyside assets. Following Mackie's death, ownership transferred to the Distillers Company Limited in 1927 and subsequently to Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) in 1930. During the 1964–65 reconstruction, the distillery doubled its still capacity, installing a second pair of pot stills to meet the growing demand for blending spirit.

In 1998 Diageo sold John Dewar & Sons — including Craigellachie — to Bacardi, which has owned the distillery ever since. Under Bacardi's ownership, Craigellachie has been reinvented as a premium single malt brand, with the 13, 17, and 23 Year Old expressions building a devoted following among those who appreciate the distillery's unapologetically heavy and aromatic house style.

Production

Craigellachie operates two wash stills and two spirit stills — four pot stills in total, following the 1964–65 doubling of capacity. Annual production capacity is approximately 4,000,000 litres of pure alcohol. The distillery's defining production choice is the retention of traditional worm tub condensers rather than modern shell-and-tube condensers. Worm tubs reduce contact between spirit vapour and copper during condensation, producing a heavier, more sulphurous spirit with greater complexity and body — a deliberate and celebrated choice that sets Craigellachie apart from the vast majority of Speyside distilleries.

Tasting Character

Craigellachie is resolutely non-conformist for Speyside: robust, muscular, and meaty where the region typically runs light and floral. The characteristic sulphurous note from the worm tub condensers is a signature — some describe it as struck matches, others as overripe tropical fruit, particularly pineapple. The 13 Year Old — the entry-level expression and the most widely available — displays this character clearly: full-flavoured, aromatic, and slightly challenging on the nose, with a rich, weighty palate. The 17 Year Old adds layers of dried fruit and oak spice; the 23 Year Old is a serious, complex whisky for experienced drinkers. An Armagnac cask-finished variant of the 13 is also available.
