Blair Athol Distillery
Picturesque Highland distillery in Pitlochry, Perthshire, founded in 1798 by John Steward and Robert Robertson. Originally called Aldour after its water source, Blair Athol survived two significant closures — after its founding and again from 1932 to 1949 — to become one of the most visited distilleries in Scotland, aided by its proximity to the popular tourist town of Pitlochry. Today it is best known as the malt heart of Bell's blended Scotch whisky, though it releases a well-regarded 12 Year Old single malt under the Diageo Flora & Fauna series and as part of the Diageo distillery range.

History
Blair Athol was founded in 1798 by John Steward and Robert Robertson as Aldour distillery, named after the Allt Dour burn that provides its water. The distillery closed soon after opening and was not revived until 1825, when John Robertson brought it back into production. The site then changed hands multiple times through the 19th century, building a reputation as a reliable Highland malt producer.
A second closure came in 1932 during the Great Depression, as Scotland's whisky industry contracted sharply. The distillery remained silent until 1949, when it was rebuilt under the ownership of Arthur Bell and Sons. Bell's invested in the facility, expanding production and cementing Blair Athol's role as the malt backbone of their flagship blend. Two additional stills were added in 1973, bringing the total to four. Following the Guinness acquisition of Arthur Bell and Sons and subsequent corporate consolidations, Blair Athol passed to Diageo following the 1997 Guinness–Grand Metropolitan merger.
Today, Blair Athol operates as a Diageo visitor destination benefiting from the high footfall of tourist traffic to Pitlochry. The visitor centre is one of the most active in Scotland outside the major brand homes.
Production
Blair Athol draws its distilling water from the Allt Dour Burn (the name meaning "burn of the otter" in Scottish Gaelic), which flows through the distillery grounds. The plant operates two wash stills of 13,000 litres each and two spirit stills of 12,000 litres each, giving an annual production capacity of approximately 2.5 million litres of pure alcohol. The wash stills and spirit stills are direct-fired in the traditional manner. Most production goes into Bell's blended Scotch whisky, with a smaller proportion reserved for single malt bottlings.
Tasting Character
Blair Athol single malt is a classic Highland expression: rich, rounded, and full-bodied, with notes of dried fruit, warm spice, and a gentle nutty quality. The spirit's richness makes it an ideal blending malt and contributes the character that defines Bell's. The 12 Year Old bottling in the Flora & Fauna series shows dark fruit, toffee, and a warming spiced finish — a style that punches above its entry-level price point. The distillery's water source, the Allt Dour Burn with its peaty Highland character, contributes a subtle earthiness to the spirit.
