Benromach Distillery is a small, traditional Speyside distillery near Forres, owned and operated by Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin — Scotland's most celebrated independent bottler. Founded in 1898, it was acquired by Gordon & MacPhail in 1993, extensively restored, and officially reopened on 15 October 1998 by HRH The Prince of Wales (now King Charles III). Benromach is among the smallest distilleries in Scotland, run by a handful of people with hands-on attention to every cask. Its declared philosophy is to produce a classic Speyside character: lightly peated, elegantly fruited, and rich in the old-fashioned sense that defined the region before the modern era stripped away the smoke. The distillery also produces Red Door Gin, launched in 2018.

History

Benromach was founded in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman, drawing water from the Chapelton Springs in the Romach Hills. Production began in 1900 but immediately foundered due to lack of capital, with the distillery closing the same year. It was acquired in 1911 by London-based Harvey McNair & Co. and continued under various owners into the mid-twentieth century, passing to Associated Scottish Distilleries Ltd in 1938 and undergoing a modernisation period from 1966 to 1974.

The distillery closed officially in 1983 — one of many Scottish closures during the industry's prolonged slump — and sat mothballed for a decade. In 1993, Gordon & MacPhail purchased the site. Over five years they comprehensively re-equipped the distillery, retaining its small scale and traditional character. The official reopening on 15 October 1998 marked a milestone both for Benromach and for Gordon & MacPhail, who had been sourcing and maturing Benromach spirit as independent bottlers for decades. First bottlings from the new era were released in 2004 after five years of maturation. In 2014 Benromach 10 Years Old won gold in the World Whisky Awards' Speyside category, validating the distillery's approach.

Production

Benromach draws its distilling water from the Chapelton Springs in the Romach Hills near Forres. The distillery operates one wash still (7,500 litres, steam-heated) and one spirit still (5,000 litres, steam-heated), making it one of the smallest producing distilleries in Scotland. Fermentation takes place in thirteen larch washbacks of 11,000 litres each; the mash tun holds 1.5 tonnes. Annual capacity is approximately 400,000 litres of pure alcohol — comparable in scale to a small craft distillery. All Benromach whisky is produced with a deliberate hint of peat: the malt is peated to approximately 12 ppm phenols, giving a gentle smoke undercurrent without dominating the spirit.

Tasting Character

Benromach aims for what it calls a "classic Speyside" character: the style that defined the region before modern distilling techniques and consumer preference drove most producers towards ultra-light, unpeated malts. The 10 Year Old — the anchor of the range — delivers vanilla, apple, and dried fruit with a persistent gentle peat-smoke undercurrent and a richness that belies its relatively young age. The Peat Smoke expressions push the smoky dimension further, reaching approximately 65–67 ppm in the spirit. The Organic expressions use certified organic barley for a subtly different cereal quality. Across the range, the small still size and traditional methods contribute a depth and warmth rarely found in larger distilleries.
