Teeling Whiskey Distillery
Teeling Whiskey Distillery is the first new distillery to open in Dublin in 125 years, founded in 2015 by brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling in the heart of the Liberties, Dublin 8 — the ancient distilling quarter of the city. The distillery opened at Newmarket Square, close to the original Marrowbone Lane site where a Teeling ancestor, Walter Teeling, distilled in 1782. In December 2023, Bacardi Limited acquired a majority stake in the company. In 2025 the distillery welcomed its one-millionth visitor — a remarkable milestone for a facility that opened fewer than a decade earlier. Teeling describes itself as the "World's Most Awarded Irish Whiskey" based on 2019–2023 World Whiskies Awards results.

History
The Teeling family's whiskey heritage runs deep. Walter Teeling established a distillery on Marrowbone Lane in Dublin's Liberties district in 1782. The modern chapter began with John Teeling, father of Jack and Stephen, who founded Cooley Distillery in 1987 — the first independent Irish whiskey distillery of the modern era. Jack and Stephen worked at Cooley before the business was sold to Beam Inc. in 2011. Rather than leave the industry, the brothers founded the Teeling Whiskey Company in 2012, initially using purchased aged stocks to build the brand's range while planning their own Dublin distillery.
The Teeling Whiskey Distillery opened in 2015, the first to distil in Dublin since the city's last operational distillery — the Phoenix Park Distillery — closed in 1921. The location in the Liberties was deliberate: this working-class neighbourhood had been Dublin's whiskey heartland for centuries, home to multiple distilleries before the industry's 20th-century collapse. The brothers chose Newmarket Square near Marrowbone Lane, directly honouring the family history.
The distillery operates three copper pot stills — a 15,000-litre wash still, a 10,000-litre intermediate still, and a 9,000-litre spirit still — producing approximately 500,000 litres annually. This three-still configuration mirrors the traditional Irish pot still triple distillation method. In December 2023, Bacardi Limited — the family-owned spirits company behind Bacardi rum, Grey Goose vodka, and other premium brands — acquired a majority stake in Teeling, giving the distillery access to Bacardi's global distribution network and investment resources.
By 2025, Teeling had welcomed over one million visitors to its city-centre distillery, establishing it as one of Dublin's most popular attractions and a cornerstone of Irish whiskey tourism.
Production
The distillery operates three pot stills: a 15,000-litre wash still, a 10,000-litre intermediate still, and a 9,000-litre spirit still. Annual capacity stands at approximately 500,000 litres. The three-still configuration allows the production of both double-distilled and triple-distilled whiskey, as well as the pot still whiskey style (made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley) that is unique to Ireland. The Blackpitts Peated Single Malt uses peated barley — an unusual choice for Dublin and the only peated whiskey produced in the city. Poitín (traditional Irish unaged spirit) is also produced.
Tasting Character
Teeling's core range spans five distinct Irish whiskey styles, united by a philosophy of unconventional distillation and innovative maturation:
Small Batch (46% ABV): Blended Irish whiskey finished in rum casks. Soft, accessible, and fruit-forward with hints of vanilla and tropical spice from the rum cask influence.
Single Grain (46% ABV): Matured in Californian red wine casks. Light and creamy with strawberry, toffee, and a gentle wine influence — designed to challenge perceptions of grain whiskey.
Single Malt (46% ABV): A range of different cask finishes applied to pot still-distilled malt. Complexity and variety across the year.
Single Pot Still (46% ABV): Traditional Irish pot still style from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, offering the classic spicy, creamy Irish pot still character.
Blackpitts Peated Single Malt: The only peated single malt produced in Dublin. Smoke and maritime notes over the Irish malt base — a genuinely unusual Irish whiskey.
