Royal Lochnagar Distillery
Royal Lochnagar Distillery is a small, picturesque Highland distillery one mile from Balmoral Castle in Crathie, Aberdeenshire, on Royal Deeside. The smallest distillery in Diageo's portfolio with an annual capacity of just 450,000 litres, it received its Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert following their visit in 1848 and was renamed Royal Lochnagar in their honour. Green Tourism Gold certified; operates with zero waste to landfill. Adjacent to Balmoral Estate, it remains one of the most historically connected distilleries in Scotland, having been awarded its fifth Royal Warrant in 2022 — now permitting display of King Charles III's Royal Arms.

History
The history of distilling at Lochnagar begins with tragedy and competition. James Robertson of Crathie established the first Lochnagar distillery in the early 19th century, but it was "burnt down in suspicious circumstances in 1824." Two subsequent replacements also burned — in 1826 and 1841 — allegedly at the hands of illicit competitors protecting their trade. John Begg founded the current distillery in January 1845, establishing the lasting foundation of today's operation.
In a famous episode of royal patronage, Begg invited Prince Albert to visit the newly built distillery. Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and their three eldest children visited the following day, 13 September 1848. They were given a tour, tried the whisky, and evidently approved: the distillery was granted a Royal Warrant and renamed "Royal Lochnagar." The distillery remained in family ownership until 1902, when it became a private limited company. The Distillers Company (DCL) acquired it in 1916. It has been in Diageo ownership since, leased from the Abergeldie Estate.
In June 2022, the distillery released the "Balmoral Platinum Edition" to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee. In 2022, a fifth Royal Warrant was awarded, now displaying King Charles III's Royal Arms.
Production
Royal Lochnagar is among the smallest and most traditional distilleries in Scotland. It operates one wash still (6,700 litres) and one spirit still (3,720 litres) — just two stills in total — with an annual capacity of approximately 450,000 litres. Water is sourced from springs in the Lochnagar hills above the distillery. The site ran on waterwheels and a steam engine until 1963. Traditional pagoda kiln heads and an open mash tun are used in production. The majority of production contributes to Johnnie Walker Black and Blue Labels. The distillery holds a Green Tourism Gold award (the highest level) and operates with zero waste to landfill. An award-winning nature reserve was established in the 1990s on the surrounding estate.
Tasting Character
Royal Lochnagar is delicate and golden, made with traditional methods that favour elegance over intensity. The 12 Year Old (40% ABV) delivers aromas of toffee and light oak with a sweet, spicy palate — accessible and refined. The Selected Reserve is a higher-end, limited expression showcasing the distillery's full potential. The Distillers Edition applies Moscatel cask finishing for a softer, sweeter complexity. The proximity to Balmoral and Royal Deeside's clear mountain waters shape a clean, fresh Highland character.
