Royal Brackla Distillery

North Scotland, ScotlandEst. 1812

Royal Brackla Distillery is a Highland single malt distillery established in 1812 by Captain William Fraser on the Cawdor Estate, near Cawdor, Nairnshire. It holds one of the most distinguished honours in Scotch whisky history: in 1833, Royal Brackla became the first Scotch whisky distillery to receive a Royal Warrant, granted by King William IV, earning it the enduring designation "The King's Own Whisky." Queen Victoria renewed the Royal Warrant in 1838. Now owned by Bacardi (through John Dewar & Sons), the distillery's defining production technique is sherry cask finishing, applied across the entire core range.

History

Royal Brackla was founded in 1812 by Captain William Fraser on the Cawdor Estate in Nairnshire. Just 21 years after its founding, in 1833, it received the first Royal Warrant ever awarded to a Scotch whisky — granted personally by King William IV — giving rise to the "King's Own Whisky" title that still appears on bottles. Queen Victoria renewed this distinction in 1838.

The distillery passed through multiple ownerships over the following century. William Fraser & Co took over in 1839, passing management to his son Robert in 1852. By 1879 it had become Brackla Distillery Co Ltd. The Distillers Company (DCL) acquired the distillery in 1943. From 1943 to 1945, production was suspended due to wartime barley restrictions. In 1964–1966 the distillery underwent major reconstruction, converting from hand-fired coal stills to steam-heated systems. A further closure ran from 1985 to 1991. John Dewar & Sons — Bacardi's Scotch whisky subsidiary — acquired Royal Brackla in 1998.

In 2019, Bacardi relaunched the Royal Brackla range with three new core expressions: the 12 Year Old (Oloroso sherry finish), 18 Year Old (Palo Cortado sherry finish), and 21 Year Old (mixed sherry cask finish).

Production

Royal Brackla operates two wash stills and two spirit stills — four in total — with a mash tun capacity of 12.5 tonnes. Eight washbacks give a combined fermentation capacity of 480,000 litres. Fermentation lasts 70 hours. The distillery uses the Cawdor Burn for cooling water and Cursack Springs for mashing. Annual capacity is approximately 3,500,000 litres. The stills are tall and designed for maximum copper contact and reflux, producing a lighter spirit. The defining character of the range comes from sherry cask finishing: the 12 uses Oloroso, the 18 uses Palo Cortado, and the 21 uses a mix of sherry cask types.

Tasting Character

Royal Brackla whiskies are characterised by sherried richness layered over a Highland fruit base. Tasting notes across the range include orchard fruit, warm spice, toffee, dark chocolate, muscovado sugar, and dried fruit — all shaped by the distinctive sherry finishing regimes. The lighter, copper-contact-friendly distillation style ensures the base spirit doesn't overpower the sherry influence. The 12 Year Old Oloroso finish is the most accessible; the 18 Palo Cortado is more complex with walnut and roasted notes; the 21 demonstrates the greatest richness and integration.
