Miltonduff Distillery
Miltonduff Distillery is a major Speyside distillery located in the village of Miltonduff, six miles south-west of Elgin, Moray. Established in 1824 on the site of a mill belonging to nearby Pluscarden Abbey, it is one of the older continuously operating distilleries in the region. Owned by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard), Miltonduff has been a cornerstone of Ballantine's blended Scotch whisky since 1936. By the late 19th century it was one of the largest distilleries in Scotland, and today it remains a high-capacity producer with approximately 5,800,000 litres annual output.

History
The Miltonduff site has historic connections to Pluscarden Abbey, whose monks operated a mill using local water on these grounds. The Duff family acquired the area and a licensed distillery was established in 1824, drawing on the excellent quality of the local water source. In 1866, William Stuart — who also owned Highland Park Distillery — acquired the facility. Stuart entered into partnership with Thomas Yool in 1890, expanding production to over one million litres per year and establishing Miltonduff as one of Scotland's largest distilleries.
In 1936, Yool sold the distillery to Hiram Walker, who made it a key production site for Ballantine's blended Scotch whisky — a relationship that has defined the distillery ever since. Ownership passed through Allied Domecq to Chivas Brothers, Pernod Ricard's Scotch whisky subsidiary, following the 2005 acquisition of Allied Domecq.
In 1960, Miltonduff pioneered a new method of heating wash stills through a series of heat exchanges and a diffuser — an innovative approach for its era. In 2017, the distillery's malt was released publicly as a 15 year old single malt under the Ballantine's brand. In May 2022, Chivas Brothers announced an £88 million investment in a new sustainable facility incorporating Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) fan technology, scheduled for completion by 2025.
Production
Miltonduff operates three wash stills and three spirit stills, all 18,000 litres in capacity, for a total of six stills. Annual capacity stands at approximately 5,800,000 litres of pure alcohol. Water is drawn from a local spring. Malt is purchased rather than produced on site. The 1960 innovation of heat exchange diffuser heating for wash stills was ahead of its time. The vast majority of production supplies Ballantine's blended Scotch whisky.
Tasting Character
Miltonduff produces a light, floral, and slightly sweet malt with notes of green apple, soft vanilla, fresh pear, and gentle cereal sweetness. The approachable, lighter style integrates seamlessly into blended Scotch and underpins the Ballantine's house character. When bottled as a single malt in the Ballantine's Miltonduff 15 Year Old, the spirit reveals more structured complexity — still bright and fruity, with oak and vanilla adding depth from extended maturation.
