Ludlow Distillery
Ludlow Distillery is an award-winning craft distillery in the Welsh Marches, based at Ludlow Farmshop two miles north of Ludlow on the A49 in Shropshire. Founded in 2018, it describes itself as one of the smallest commercial whisky distilleries in the UK and holds a distinctive claim: it is England's only distillery to use Scottish peated malt in all its whiskies, giving the spirit a character that sits apart from most English single malts. Production uses a wood-fired copper pot still — a technique that adds another layer of traditional craft to the operation.
The distillery moved to the Ludlow Farmshop site in 2023, opening a purpose-built visitor centre that operates seven days a week and has earned a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award 2024–2025, placing it in the top 10% of worldwide attractions.

History
Ludlow Distillery was established in 2018, initially operating from a smaller premises in the Welsh Marches before expanding to the current Ludlow Farmshop site. The move in 2023 allowed the distillery to create a fully integrated visitor experience alongside an established food, retail, and leisure destination. Since opening at the Farmshop, the distillery has grown rapidly as a visitor attraction, building a loyal following through its tours, Gin School, and accessible site. The Cask Reserve programme — allowing individuals to own a personal barrel of Ludlow Whisky — has added a direct-to-consumer premium tier.
Production
Ludlow Distillery operates one copper pot still, fired with wood — a traditional method that imparts warmth and character to the new make spirit. The distillery uses Scottish peated malt across its entire whisky range, making it the only English distillery to do so consistently. This choice lends the whisky a subtle smokiness alongside the rounded, "curiously smooth" character that the distillery markets as its house style. In addition to whisky, the distillery produces gin, vodka, rum, brandy, eau de vie, and liqueurs — a full craft spirits portfolio produced in small batches on site.
Tasting Character
Ludlow Whisky is marketed as "curiously smooth" — a copper pot–distilled single malt English whisky with a distinctive gentle peat influence derived from Scottish peated malt. The character is rounded and approachable, with the wood-fired still adding complexity to the distillation process. The gin range uses natural botanicals and is available in dry and fruit varieties. The full portfolio covers a wide range of spirit styles, all made with a craft-first ethos.
