Lochlea Distillery
Lochlea Distillery is an independent, family-owned single estate distillery located on Lochlea Farm, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire — on the very land once farmed by Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns, during one of the most formative periods of his life. Burns lived and worked at Lochlea Farm between 1777 and 1784; the farm's connection to Burns is central to the distillery's identity, informing everything from the timing of new releases (Our Barley launched ahead of Burns Night in January 2025) to its ethos of patience and craft over speed and scale.
Commissioned in 2018 with a £6 million investment, the distillery operates as a true grain-to-glass producer: barley is grown and harvested on the farm, then distilled and matured on the same estate. The result is a genuine single-estate Lowland-style whisky grounded in Ayrshire terroir.

History
The project to establish a distillery at Lochlea Farm was conceived with a long-term quality mindset — favouring flavour, consistency, and control over rapid volume. After planning and investment were secured, the distillery was commissioned in 2018 under the ownership of Neil McGeoch and the broader family partnership.
The first single malt was launched in October 2021 — an unusually quick release for a distillery founded in 2018, suggesting production began promptly and the spirit was deemed ready at three years of age. A cask strength expression followed in May 2023. In January 2025 the distillery launched "Our Barley" — the farm's flagship expression — timed deliberately to coincide with Burns Night celebrations. August 2025 brought the first permanent core range of four expressions, consolidating Lochlea's position as a credible estate whisky brand.
In October 2023, Lochlea won the International Trade Business of the Year award from the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce — recognition of both spirits quality and the commercial development of the brand.
Production
Lochlea operates one wash still and one spirit still, with an annual capacity of approximately 200,000 litres. Barley is grown and harvested on the surrounding Ayrshire farmland, then processed, distilled, and matured entirely on the estate. The distillery uses a range of cask types across its permanent range — ex-bourbon, wine casks, sherry casks — allowing distinct character profiles from the same base spirit. The farm's clay-rich Ayrshire soil and the moderate lowland climate influence both the barley character and maturation conditions.
Tasting Character
Lochlea produces a clean, bright Lowland-style single malt with a distinct farm and grain character rooted in Ayrshire terroir. The permanent core range launched in 2025 offers four contrasting expressions from the same estate:
- Our Barley — The farm's signature expression; fresh and malt-forward; barley terroir at its most direct
- Orchard & Oak — Fruit-forward with oak spice; ex-bourbon cask influence; bright and approachable
- Dark Briar — Rich sherry cask maturation; deep fruit, warm spice, and chocolate notes
- Smoke Without Fire — Combines the clean Lochlea base with gentle peat smoke; balanced and unexpected
