Linkwood Distillery

Speyside, ScotlandEst. 1821

Linkwood Distillery is a Speyside distillery on the southern outskirts of Elgin, Moray, founded in 1821. It produces a light, elegant, and floral single malt that is highly prized by independent bottlers, blenders, and collectors — yet remains largely unknown outside whisky circles, as the vast majority of its production goes into Diageo's blended Scotch brands. Owned by Diageo, Linkwood's spirit is one of the most sought-after for independent cask bottlings, with Gordon & MacPhail and others releasing notable expressions over the decades.

The distillery is associated with one of whisky's most charming stories: in the 1930s, a manager reportedly refused to allow any changes to the distillery whatsoever — even preserving the spiders' webs — for fear of altering the spirit's unique character. Whether myth or management policy, it reflects the reverence with which Linkwood's delicate character has long been treated.

History

Peter Brown founded Linkwood in 1821 with two stills. He deliberately delayed beginning legal production until after the Excise Act of 1823 made licensed distilling commercially viable; spirits first ran legally in 1824. The distillery was managed by James Walker until Brown's death in 1868, after which his son William Brown undertook a complete rebuild of the facility between 1872 and 1873 on the same site, substantially increasing capacity.

The distillery was sold after William Brown's tenure, and the Linkwood-Glenlivet company was formally constituted in 1898 and listed publicly. Innes Cameron joined in 1902, eventually becoming managing director and the largest shareholder until his death in 1932. The company subsequently passed to Scottish Malt Distillers and then The Distillers Company. During the Second World War the distillery was mothballed between 1941 and 1945 due to barley shortages.

The facility was completely refurbished in 1962 under manager Roderick Mackenzie, who had the stills electrified and replaced with "exact replicas of the former stills" to preserve the spirit character. A second distillery building — known as Linkwood B — was constructed alongside the original in 1971, equipped with steam-heated stills and bringing combined capacity to approximately 2.5 million litres per year. Linkwood B was mothballed again in 1985 and full production resumed across both still houses in 2008. Diageo is the current owner.

Production

Linkwood operates three wash stills and three spirit stills across two distillery buildings: the original Linkwood A (one wash still, one spirit still) and the 1971 Linkwood B (two wash stills, two spirit stills). Combined annual capacity is approximately 2,500,000 litres. Water is drawn from springs near Milbuies Loch. The original still configurations were carefully replicated in both the 1962 refurbishment and subsequent expansions to preserve the characteristic light, floral spirit.

Tasting Character

Linkwood is renowned for a light, elegant character centred on rose petal florality, orchard fruit sweetness, and a smooth, creamy texture. The nose brings delicate floral aromas — rose petals, meadow flowers — alongside fresh orchard fruit (peach and pear) and soft citrus. The palate is smooth and gentle, with vanilla cream, a hint of orange peel and clove emerging with maturation, and a long, clean finish. This delicacy makes Linkwood exceptional blending malt; at 12 years in the Flora & Fauna bottling, it reveals a single malt of genuine refinement.
