Kingsbarns Distillery
Kingsbarns Distillery is a Lowland single malt distillery set within a beautifully restored early 19th-century farmstead at East Newhall Farm, Kingsbarns, near St Andrews in Fife. The farm buildings, built around 1800 under Thomas Erskine, 9th Earl of Kellie, are arranged around a courtyard and feature a striking medieval doocot — a fortified-looking tower with 600 terracotta nesting boxes for pigeons, historically supplying eggs and meat for the Cambo Estate.
The distillery was established in 2014, originally conceived by Douglas Clement, a former golf caddie inspired by the lack of a local distillery near the famous St Andrews golf courses. After securing a £670,000 grant from the Scottish Government, Clement convinced the Wemyss family to invest £2.5–3 million. The Wemyss family — whisky lovers with their own roots in Fife going back centuries and operators of Wemyss Malts since 2005 — now own and operate the distillery. The flagship "Dream to Dram" expression was released in 2020.

History
The farm buildings at East Newhall were constructed around 1800. Restoration work began in June 2013 over three years at a cost of over £3 million, transforming the historic structures into a working distillery without losing their architectural character.
The project began with Douglas Clement's vision before the Wemyss family took over. William Wemyss had established Wemyss Malts as an independent bottler in 2005, and the family's involvement in Kingsbarns brought the ambition of distilling in Fife to life. The distillery officially opened in November 2014; the first casks were filled in 2015.
In August 2018 the distillery released its first single malt Scotch whisky. November 2018 brought Balcomie, a sherry cask expression. A gin distillery was opened on-site in 2017 to produce Darnley's Gin using Italian-imported stills. In November 2022 the distillery announced expansion plans including twelve new bonded warehouses and a bottling plant. The flagship "Dream to Dram" expression — named to evoke the family's journey from a dream to bottled whisky — was released in 2020.
Production
Kingsbarns operates one wash still and one spirit still, with an annual capacity of approximately 200,000 litres. Water is drawn from a borehole on the estate. Barley for the Dream to Dram is harvested exclusively from East Fife fields, giving the whisky a clear local terroir character tied to the same landscape that surrounds the distillery. A separate gin still produces Darnley's Gin using Italian-manufactured equipment.
Tasting Character
Kingsbarns produces a characteristically light and floral Lowland-style single malt. The Dream to Dram emphasises seasonal craftsmanship and local barley terroir. Expect fresh orchard fruit, delicate floral notes, gentle cereal sweetness, and a clean, lingering finish typical of quality Lowland whisky. The Balcomie expression adds sherry cask richness — dried fruit, warm spice, and toffee — alongside the clean base character. Multiple IWSC and World Whiskies Awards honours have confirmed the quality of both core expressions.
