Glentauchers Distillery

Speyside, ScotlandEst. 1897

Glentauchers Distillery is a Speyside single malt distillery located in Mulben, near Keith in Moray. Founded in 1897 by James Buchanan & Co. to supply malt for Buchanan's and Black & White blended whiskies, the distillery was designed by the renowned distillery architect Charles Doig & Son. Today it is owned by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard) and its spirit goes primarily into Ballantine's, Black & White, Buchanan's, and Teacher's blends. Annual capacity is approximately 4.5 million litres. A railway freight siding from the Aberdeen–Inverness line once served the distillery directly; the former Tauchers Platform station closed in 1964.

History

Glentauchers was founded in 1897 by James Buchanan & Co., the company behind Buchanan's Blended Scotch and Black & White. The site at Mulben was selected for its consistent water supply from the Rosarie Burn and proximity to the Aberdeen–Inverness railway line, essential for moving grain in and whisky out. The building was designed by John Alcock and overseen by the celebrated distillery architect Charles Doig & Son — the same firm responsible for the distinctive pagoda kiln designs seen across Scotland. Production began in 1898.

In 1925 James Buchanan Co. Ltd joined The Distillers Company Limited, taking Glentauchers with it into the DCL stable. The distillery was mothballed by United Distillers in 1985 during the decade of overproduction closures. In 1989 Allied Distillers acquired the site and resumed production. When Pernod Ricard acquired Allied Domecq in 2005, Glentauchers passed to Chivas Brothers, who operate it to this day as a key blending component.

The only official single malt release was a 15 Year Old in 2000. Gordon & MacPhail produced semi-official releases in the 1990s. Independent bottlers continue to release single cask expressions from this rarely seen distillery.

Production

Water comes from the Rosarie Burn. Glentauchers operates 3 wash stills and 3 spirit stills with a total production capacity of approximately 4.5 million litres of pure alcohol per year. Almost all production is directed into blended Scotch whiskies. The distillery's output contributes richness and body to Ballantine's, Black & White, Buchanan's, and Teacher's.

Tasting Character

Glentauchers produces a rich, full-bodied Speyside malt with notes of orchard fruit, vanilla, and a subtle nuttiness. This robust character makes it well-suited to enriching blends — contributing body and fruit without overwhelming the blend's balance. The rare single malt bottlings that have appeared through independent bottlers reveal a characterful, substantial spirit with dried stone fruit, oak spice, and a warming finish.
