Glenlossie Distillery
Glenlossie Distillery is a Speyside distillery founded in 1876, located near Elgin in Moray. Owned by Diageo, it produces a delicate, grassy single malt primarily used in Haig blended whiskies. The distillery shares its site with Mannochmore Distillery, which was built alongside it in 1971, and the two sites together hold 14 warehouses storing around 250,000 casks. Glenlossie is distinguished by the purifier pipes fitted to all six of its stills — a technical innovation that redirects heavier alcohols back for re-distillation, producing an unusually clean, refined spirit style. Annual capacity is approximately 1.1 million litres.

History
Glenlossie was founded in 1876 by a partnership including John Duff — who later founded both Longmorn Distillery and BenRiach Distillery — along with Alexander Allen, H.M.S. Mackay, and London blender John Hopkins (who also owned Tobermory Distillery). The distillery joined the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1919 and was aligned with Haig's blending operation from 1930.
A significant fire in 1929 caused considerable damage; one of the fire engines deployed dated to the 1860s and is now on display at Dallas Dhu Distillery. Glenlossie recovered from the fire and continued operating through the 20th century. The distillery expanded from 4 to 6 stills in 1962, doubling its purifier-equipped still configuration. In 1971 Mannochmore Distillery was constructed on the same site, and the two distilleries traditionally alternated production on a 12-months-on, 12-months-off cycle — though Mannochmore now runs year-round. Glenlossie became part of Diageo in 1997. A 10 Year Old expression was launched in the Flora & Fauna series in 1990.
Production
Water comes from the Bardon Burn. Glenlossie operates 3 wash stills (15,600 L each) and 3 spirit stills (13,500 L each), all fitted with horizontal lyne arms and purifier pipes. These purifiers redirect heavier alcohols back into the still for re-distillation, producing a particularly clean and refined new make. Extended fermentation of around 80 hours in the 10 washbacks (8 larch, 2 stainless steel) encourages grassy, floral notes. Annual capacity is approximately 1.1 million litres. The combined Glenlossie/Mannochmore site holds 14 warehouses with approximately 250,000 casks.
Tasting Character
Glenlossie's spirit is light, grassy, and refined, with a distinctive oily texture derived from the purifier pipes. Typical tasting notes include fresh cut grass, floral aromas, light orchard fruit (pear, green apple), a gentle herbal quality, and a smooth, slightly oily finish. The extended fermentation adds floral complexity to the new make. Independent bottlings reveal a charming, understated single malt that rewards patience. The highly prized spirit is also valued by independent bottlers who regularly release Glenlossie single casks.
