"The Edinburgh Malt" — Glenkinchie is a rare Lowland single malt distillery set in rural farmland near Pencaitland, East Lothian, approximately 15 miles from Edinburgh. Founded around 1825 by brothers John and George Rate as the Milton Distillery, it sits beside Kinchie Burn (a name derived from the De Quincy family, the original landowners). One of Diageo's Four Corners of Scotland distilleries, Glenkinchie represents the Lowlands in cardhu blending. The distillery operates with 1 wash still (30,963 L) and 1 spirit still (20,998 L) — exceptionally large stills that contribute to the characteristic lightness and delicacy of the spirit — with an annual capacity of 2.7 million litres. A multi-million-pound visitor centre was unveiled in 2020.

History

The Milton Distillery was established around 1825 by brothers John and George Rate on the farmland south-east of Edinburgh. The name "Kinchie" is a corruption of "De Quincy," the original owners of the surrounding land. The brothers are believed to have renamed it Glenkinchie around 1837. In 1853 the Rate brothers went bankrupt and the site was converted to a sawmill; in 1881 Major James Grey rebuilt the plant and whisky production restarted.

In 1914 Glenkinchie joined Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) alongside Rosebank, St Magdalene, Grange, and Clydesdale. SMD merged with The Distillers Company (DCL) in 1925. In 1969 the malting floors were decommissioned and converted into a whisky museum — a collection of distillery artefacts and equipment that forms part of the current visitor experience. In 1986 Guinness acquired DCL; in 1997 Guinness merged with Grand Metropolitan to form Diageo, the current owner.

In 1998 Glenkinchie became one of the six original Classic Malts of Scotland, Diageo's programme to establish benchmark regional single malts. In 2020 Diageo unveiled a new multi-million-pound visitor centre at the distillery, transforming Glenkinchie into a significant tourism destination south-east of Edinburgh. The distillery has won recognition for its sustainability, including a Gold Award for Green Tourism.

Production

Water comes from the Lammermuir Hills burns. Glenkinchie operates with just 1 wash still (30,963 L) and 1 spirit still (20,998 L) — among the largest pot stills in the Lowlands, contributing directly to the spirit's characteristic lightness and delicacy. The large still size means the spirit vapour has a long journey and extensive copper contact, stripping heavier congeners. Annual capacity is 2.7 million litres. Malting ceased in 1969; malted barley is now sourced externally.

Tasting Character

Glenkinchie is a classically delicate Lowland single malt: fragrant dried flowers, cut grass, and nutty cereal on the nose, with a sweet palate featuring gentle liquorice and a dry, clean finish. The 12 Year Old (43% ABV) is an ideal gateway whisky — light, accessible, and food-friendly, it is a world away from the rich sherried Highland style. The Distillers Edition (finished in Amontillado casks) adds cut hay and malted barley notes to a biscuity sweet palate. The 12 Year Old won Best Lowland Single Malt at the 2013 World Whiskies Awards.
