Glenfiddich Distillery is the world's best-selling single malt Scotch whisky, accounting for approximately 35% of single malt sales globally and sold in 180 countries. Founded in 1886 by William Grant — who built the distillery by hand with his nine children and a single stonemason — first spirit flowed on Christmas Day 1887 from second-hand stills purchased for £120 from Elizabeth Cummings of Cardhu Distillery. Located half a mile north of Dufftown in Speyside, Glenfiddich remains family-owned by William Grant & Sons, now in its fifth generation. Water comes from the Robbie Dhu Spring on the distillery estate, and an on-site cooperage and bottling hall make Glenfiddich one of the most self-sufficient distilleries in Scotland.

History

William Grant founded Glenfiddich in 1886, completing the construction of the distillery with his family's own labour. The first spirit was produced on Christmas Day 1887 — a date that has become central to the distillery's mythology. The stills purchased second-hand from Cardhu are the direct ancestors of the current fleet.

The distillery grew steadily through the early 20th century. During US Prohibition (1920s) Glenfiddich expanded production in preparation for the post-repeal market — a strategic gamble that paid off. In 1956 the distinctive triangular bottle was introduced, designed by Hans Schleger, giving Glenfiddich an immediately recognisable silhouette.

A pivotal decision came in 1963 when Glenfiddich began aggressively marketing single malt whisky directly to international consumers — at a time when blended Scotch utterly dominated global sales. This bold, pioneering move opened the single malt category and laid the foundations for what is now a multi-billion-pound market. Glenfiddich introduced single malt to duty-free markets and was among the first to use gift tins, making premium gifting of whisky commonplace.

Today Glenfiddich operates 43 distinctive swan-neck copper pot stills — 16 wash stills and 27 spirit stills — all handmade and maintained by in-house coppersmiths, giving an annual capacity of approximately 21 million litres. A dedicated cooperage and large bottling plant (at Bellshill) complete the vertically integrated operation.

Production

Water comes from the Robbie Dhu Spring on the distillery estate, a source William Grant identified as essential to the spirit character. The distillery operates 43 copper pot stills (16 wash stills, 27 spirit stills), all with distinctive swan necks and maintained by a permanent in-house team of coppersmiths. Annual capacity is approximately 21 million litres. Glenfiddich has its own cooperage on site and a large bottling plant at Bellshill. Maturation relies on a combination of American oak ex-bourbon casks (for the fruit-forward core range), European oak ex-sherry casks, and an ever-expanding range of finishing casks. The 15 Year Old uses a Solera vat system — unique in Speyside — in which the vat is never fully emptied, ensuring a continuous blending of multiple vintages.

Tasting Character

Glenfiddich is characteristically approachable and fruit-forward, making it the gateway single malt for generations of new drinkers. The 12 Year Old shows fresh pear, vanilla, and a hint of oak. The 15 Year Old Solera (matured in a unique Solera vat combining bourbon, sherry, and new oak) adds warm spice, honey, and rich fruit. The 18 Year Old brings dried fruit, toffee, and deeper oak complexity. The 21 Gran Reserva (finished in rum casks) adds tropical fruit and warming sweetness. The 23 Grand Cru is finished in French cuvée casks. The range emphasises elegance and accessibility without sacrificing character.
