Glen Keith Distillery

Speyside, ScotlandEst. 1957

Glen Keith Distillery is a Speyside distillery owned by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard), located in the town of Keith, within sight of the much older Strathisla Distillery. Founded in 1957 and operational from around 1960, it was the first new distillery to open in Speyside since the great whisky crash of 1898 — a landmark moment in the industry's post-war confidence. Glen Keith draws its process water from the Balloch Hills springs and produces a delicate, honeyed, floral spirit used primarily to enrich Chivas Regal and associated blends. The distillery was mothballed in 1999 but reopened in June 2013 following extensive reconstruction.

History

Glen Keith was conceived and built by Chivas Brothers in the late 1950s, with distillation beginning in 1958 and construction fully complete by around 1960. Its opening was notable: at a time when Scotch whisky production was dominated by existing establishments, building an entirely new distillery in Speyside was a statement of ambition. Unusually for a Scottish distillery, Glen Keith opened practising triple distillation — a technique associated more with Irish whiskey — which added further lightness and delicacy to the spirit.

In 1970 the distillery switched to double distillation when two additional stills were added, and at that point it became the first distillery in Scotland to use gas-fired stills rather than coal or steam. Glen Keith served principally as a blending malt for Chivas Regal, Passport, and 100 Pipers throughout its active years.

In 1999, during a period of global Scotch whisky overproduction, Chivas Brothers mothballed Glen Keith. The site sat silent for over a decade. In 2001 Pernod Ricard acquired Chivas Brothers and Glen Keith passed into the French group's ownership. Extensive reconstruction work began in 2012 and the distillery reopened in June 2013, fully modernised but retaining its core purpose as a blending malt producer.

Production

Glen Keith draws water from the springs of the Balloch Hills near Keith. Following its 2013 reopening, the distillery operates a modern production facility that has replaced much of the original equipment. The spirit produced is delicate and honeyed — characteristic of the lighter Speyside style — with prominent floral and vanilla notes making it ideal for adding elegance and fragrance to blended Scotch. Almost all production goes directly into Chivas Regal and associated brands; no official owner-bottled single malt is currently in production.

Tasting Character

Glen Keith produces a delicate, honeyed Speyside character with prominent floral notes alongside vanilla and orchard fruit. The style is lighter and more fragrant than many of its Speyside neighbours, a legacy of both the triple-distillation origins and the continued emphasis on elegance over weight. As a blending malt it contributes lift and fragrance to Chivas Regal, but independent bottlings reveal a charming, approachable single malt in its own right. Expect fresh pear, honeysuckle, vanilla cream, and a gentle spiced finish.
