Independent bottler. Scotland's oldest independent bottler, founded in Aberdeen in 1842 by George Duncan and later associated with William Cadenhead, whose name the company now bears. Now owned by J. & A. Mitchell & Co. — owners of Springbank Distillery — and headquartered in Campbeltown since 1972, with retail shops in Edinburgh and London. Cadenhead's bottles single cask and small batch whisky, rum, gin, cognac, and other spirits always at natural strength, with no chill-filtration and no colouring — a house philosophy that prioritises the authentic character of each cask above commercial consistency. As an independent bottler, Cadenhead's does not distil spirit.

[!info] Bottler, not a distillery Cadenhead's is an independent bottler, not a distillery. All releases are sourced from third-party distilleries and bottled by Cadenhead's without additives, chill-filtration, or artificial colouring.

History

George Duncan founded the business in 1842 at 47 Netherkirkgate, Aberdeen, initially trading as a grocery and spirits merchant. William Cadenhead, whose name the company eventually adopted, became associated with the operation in the 19th century and gave the business its enduring identity. The Aberdeen location served as the company's home for over 130 years, during which Cadenhead's built a reputation for honest, character-driven bottlings that contrasted with the heavily processed, consistent blended Scotch that dominated the commercial market.

In 1972 the company relocated to Campbeltown, the historic whisky town on the Mull of Kintyre, where J. & A. Mitchell & Co. — owners of Springbank Distillery — had acquired the business. The move brought Cadenhead's into the orbit of one of Scotland's most fiercely independent distilling families, and the two operations share a philosophical kinship: traditional methods, no shortcuts, no compromise on quality. Cadenhead's has been bottling continuously since 1842, making it the longest-operating independent bottler in Scotland.

A London shop opened on Chiltern Street, Marylebone, extending the company's retail presence to England. The Edinburgh shop on the Royal Mile operates from the historic Canongate. Both retail locations carry the full range of Cadenhead's bottlings alongside a broader selection of whisky, rum, and other spirits.
