Benbecula Distillery
Benbecula Distillery is a new single malt Scotch whisky distillery on the Isle of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides, founded by Angus MacMillan — a local businessman and crofter from South Uist who spent 28 years leading West Minch Salmon Farm. The distillery occupies a converted salmon processing plant on Benbecula's northern shore, overlooking North Uist, and produced its first spirit in June 2024. Annual capacity is approximately 350,000 litres. A distinctive glass-walled lighthouse structure houses the copper pot still, echoing the Stevenson Lighthouse on the nearby Monach Islands. MacMillan was also a founding director in the 2006 community buyout of South Uist, Eriskay, and Benbecula — giving the distillery deep roots in the local community.

History
Angus MacMillan's ambition to bring whisky production to Benbecula was a long-held dream, shaped by his decades working in West Minch Salmon — the fish processing facility that the distillery has since repurposed. MacMillan played a key role in the 2006 community buyout of the southern islands, demonstrating his commitment to the long-term future of the Outer Hebrides. The decision to revive historical distilling techniques — including the use of bere barley (a heritage grain cultivated on Uist for centuries) and heather-peated malting — was influenced by 19th-century whisky historian Alfred Barnard, who documented similar practices during his 1885 Scottish distillery tour. The first spirit ran in June 2024. A Founders Society was established offering lifetime complimentary tours, early access to releases, and a 5% discount on products.
Production
Barley is primarily bere barley grown on MacMillan's family croft, enriched with seaweed as a natural fertiliser — a traditional Hebridean farming practice. A distinguishing feature of production is the malting process: foraged island heather is added to peat fires during kilning, an ancient technique rarely used in modern Scottish distilling. The copper pot still is housed in a glass-walled lighthouse structure inspired by the Stevenson lighthouses of the Outer Hebrides. Maturation uses both bourbon and sherry casks. Annual capacity is approximately 350,000 litres. No aged whisky has been released as of April 2026; the first expressions are expected no earlier than 2027.
Tasting Character
The spirit profile is described as classically marine: smoky on the nose with salty and sweetly peated notes. Light to medium peating allows fruity and floral notes to emerge alongside the peat — a balance suited to the island's maritime character. The distinctive heather-peated bere barley expression is a notable offering; the heather adds a floral, honey-like quality to the peat smoke that distinguishes it from standard mainland peating. No aged whisky is yet available.
