Ben Nevis Distillery stands at the foot of Scotland's highest mountain — Ben Nevis at 4,406 feet — on the A82 on the outskirts of Fort William in the West Highlands. One of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland, it was founded in 1825 by "Long John" McDonald — a 6 ft 4 in descendant of a ruler of the western Scottish kingdom of Argyll, whose towering stature inspired the naming of the Long John blended Scotch. Ben Nevis has been owned by Nikka Whisky Distilling of Tokyo (a subsidiary of Asahi Group Holdings) since 1989, making it a significant example of Japanese custodianship of a Scottish heritage site. Annual production capacity is 2 million litres. Water comes from the Allt a'Mhuilinn, which originates from two high pools on Ben Nevis itself: Coire Leis and Coire na'Ciste.

History

"Long John" McDonald founded the distillery in 1825. His son Donald inherited the operation after Long John's death in 1856. In 1878 a second distillery — Nevis Distillery — was constructed nearby; in the early 1900s the two facilities were merged into a single operation. In 1955 Joseph Hobbs led a takeover of the distillery and introduced a Coffey (continuous) still, making Ben Nevis one of the first distilleries in Scotland to simultaneously produce both malt and grain whisky on the same site — an arrangement that operated until 1981. Through the 1970s and early 1980s the distillery was under Whitbread's ownership. It closed in 1986 as the industry contracted. In 1989 Nikka Whisky acquired the distillery and reopened it for malt production in 1990, investing in quality improvements while preserving traditional methods. A visitor centre and café opened in 1991. Nikka's investment has delivered stability and a slowly growing international reputation for the 10 Year Old flagship.

Production

Water is drawn from the Allt a'Mhuilinn stream, which originates from Coire Leis and Coire na'Ciste — two high corrie pools on Ben Nevis itself. The still house runs two wash stills at 25,000 litres and two spirit stills at 20,000 litres, with an annual capacity of 2 million litres of pure alcohol. Ben Nevis uses both peated and unpeated malt, though the standard expressions are predominantly unpeated. Maturation takes place in a range of cask types. The Coffey still that once produced grain spirit was removed in 1981 and is no longer in operation.

Tasting Character

Ben Nevis 10 Year Old is bottled at 46% ABV and represents a full-bodied, robust Highland character. The nose shows fragrant and floral notes alongside honey, citrus beeswax, toffee, vanilla, sweet apple, and honeydew melon. The palate opens with spice and cereal before developing smooth dark chocolate creaminess. A subtle waft of peat backs the fruit sweetness, adding complexity without dominance. The overall character is hefty and layered for a 10 Year Old. MacDonald's Glencoe — the 8 Year Old blended malt bottled at cask strength (58%) — is named in honour of Long John MacDonald and delivers a pronounced spicy character.
