Ballindalloch Distillery
Ballindalloch Distillery claims the distinction of being Scotland's only single-estate distillery — every stage of production, from growing the spring barley on the Home Farm to distillation and maturation, takes place on the Ballindalloch Estate in Banffshire. The estate has been the home of the Macpherson-Grant family since 1546. The distillery was conceived in 2011 by Clare and Oliver Russell as a way to breathe new life into old farm steadings on the estate. Production began in September 2014. Water is drawn from the Garline Springs. Annual capacity is approximately 100,000 litres — intentionally small to prioritise quality over volume.

History
Ballindalloch Estate has a distilling history stretching back to the early 1820s, when a distillery operated at Delnashaugh above the confluence of the Rivers Avon and Spey. The estate itself has been in the Macpherson-Grant family continuously since 1546 — making it one of the oldest family-held estates in Scotland. Clare and Oliver Russell began exploring uses for the estate's historic farm buildings in late 2011, ultimately committing to a single-estate distillery as a project that would connect the family's land management, farming, and heritage in one enterprise. The current distillery was built within converted farm steadings on the estate from 2013, with production starting in September 2014. The inaugural bottling was released in 2022. Ballindalloch won the Craft Producer award at the Whisky Magazine Awards 2022.
Production
Water comes from the Garline Springs on the estate. Barley — specifically spring barley — is grown on the Ballindalloch Home Farm and processed on site. The distillery runs one wash still and one spirit still, with an annual capacity of approximately 100,000 litres of pure alcohol — a deliberate choice to maintain quality and artisan scale. Maturation uses a combination of first-fill and refill barrels, hogsheads, and first-fill Sherry butts, all warehoused on the estate.
Tasting Character
New-make spirit from Ballindalloch is described as robust and fruity, heavier in body than that of nearby Cragganmore Distillery. The distillery targets a sweet, fruity character that develops through careful cask selection. Maturation in first-fill Sherry butts contributes dried fruit, spice, and richness; ex-bourbon hogsheads add vanilla and cereal sweetness. Given the intentionally small scale and the heritage grain provenance, Ballindalloch expressions are expected to build a reputation as premium estate single malts comparable to peers like Daftmill in Fife.
