Annandale Distillery
Annandale Distillery is a historic Lowland distillery in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, revived in 2014 after a closure of almost a century. Founded in 1836 by George Donald, it is one of the southernmost whisky distilleries in Scotland, sitting close to the English border in the valley of the River Annan. After lying dormant since 1924, the distillery was acquired in 2007 by David Thomson and Teresa Church, who invested £10.5 million to restore and recommission it. Production restarted in November 2014 and the first commercial releases appeared in 2018. The distillery now produces both peated (Man O'Sword) and unpeated (Man O'Words) expressions, drawing on the town of Annan's connections to Robert Burns and Robert the Bruce. Annual capacity is 260,000 litres.

History
George Donald founded Annandale Distillery in 1836 in the market town of Annan, taking advantage of the Solway Firth lowland location and reliable local water. In 1893 the distillery was purchased by Johnnie Walker and Son, who used its spirit for their expanding blending operations. Production ceased in 1924 — a casualty of the post-World War I whisky depression — and the site remained idle for over eighty years, though it was described as "very well preserved" when rediscovered.
In 2007 David Thomson and Teresa Church purchased the distillery site and embarked on a comprehensive restoration. A £150,000 government grant in 2008 formed part of the £10.5 million total investment. The visitor centre opened in November 2014 and the first casks were distilled the same month. In November 2017 David and Teresa personally broached the first unpeated cask; in December 2017 Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir broached the first peated cask — an occasion that raised £27,800 for Doddie's motor neuron disease charity, My Name'5 Doddie Foundation. The first commercial release of 20 casks from the 2014 production followed in June 2018. The distillery also owns The Globe Inn in Dumfries — a famous Robert Burns-associated pub — deepening its cultural connection to the region. The visitor centre achieved a 5-star VisitScotland rating.
Production
Water is sourced from a bore hole on the distillery site. The operation runs one wash still and two spirit stills (an unusual 1:2 configuration that allows a degree of flexibility), with an annual capacity of 260,000 litres of pure alcohol. Both peated and unpeated new make are produced — the peated spirit destined for Man O'Sword, the unpeated for Man O'Words. Maturation takes place on site.
Tasting Character
Man O'Words is the unpeated expression, named in honour of Robert Burns — "The Man of Words." It presents a soft, approachable Lowland character: delicate floral notes, green apple, vanilla, and gentle grain sweetness. Man O'Sword is the peated expression, named in honour of Robert the Bruce — "The Man of the Sword." It brings Lowland elegance to a peated canvas, with the smoke integrated rather than dominant, alongside honey, dried fruit, and warm spice. Both expressions are released as vintage-dated bottlings, reflecting the distillery's commitment to transparency and age.
