Aberlour Distillery
Aberlour Distillery occupies a sheltered position at the confluence of the Lour Burn and the River Spey in the village of Charlestown of Aberlour, at the heart of Speyside. Founded by James Fleming in 1879 — with production beginning in December 1880 — it was built on land beside the Lour burn on the slopes of Ben Rinnes. The distillery is now one of the best-selling single malt Scotch whiskies in the world, particularly in France, and is owned by Chivas Brothers, a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard. Annual capacity stands at 3.9 million litres.

History
An earlier distillery had operated on the estate from approximately 1825, but it was James Fleming (1830–1895) — a local banker's son turned entrepreneur — who founded the present distillery in 1879, creating what was described at the time as the most modern distillery of its day. A fire in 1879 destroyed the earlier buildings; Fleming's rebuilt facility began production in December 1880. A second serious fire in 1898 again damaged much of the site; the distillery was reconstructed and production resumed without interruption to the long-term business.
The distillery passed through several owners over the next half century. In 1892 it was sold to Robert Thorne & Sons, then to W.H. Holt & Sons in 1920, and to S. Campbell & Sons Ltd in 1945. Pernod Ricard entered the picture when it acquired Campbell Distilleries in 1975 — bringing Aberlour into one of the world's leading spirits groups. When Chivas Brothers was reorganised as the Scotch whisky division of Pernod Ricard in 2001, Aberlour moved into its portfolio. A modernised visitor centre opened in 2002. By 2014 Aberlour was selling over 3.5 million bottles annually, making it one of the few Scottish single malts to breach that threshold. Between 1986 and 2026 the distillery accumulated 58 Gold awards and 8 Trophies at the IWSC and ISC.
Production
Water is drawn from the Birkenbush spring (Target spring), which rises on the slopes of Ben Rinnes above the distillery — the same hill that gives the distillery its distinctive highland microclimate. The still house runs two wash stills of 21,310 litres each and two spirit stills (20,000 L and 15,456 L), upgraded in 1973 from the original two-still configuration. The annual capacity is approximately 3.9 million litres of pure alcohol. Maturation is primarily in ex-Oloroso sherry casks from Spain, with the remainder in ex-bourbon American oak. Roughly 70–80% of the distillery's stock matures in sherry wood, giving Aberlour its characteristic dried-fruit richness.
Tasting Character
Aberlour is sweet and fruit-forward rather than smoky or heavily spiced. The house style leans into double cask maturation: sherry-dominant for depth and dried fruit, ex-bourbon for vanilla and sweetness. Expect dark cherry, raisin, Christmas cake spice, milk chocolate, orange peel, and toasted oak. The flagship A'bunadh (Gaelic for "of the origin") is released in numbered batches at cask strength — typically 59–62% ABV — and is one of the most consistently celebrated sherry bombs in the category. The 12 Year Old is the accessible entry point; the 18 Year Old adds further complexity from extended wood contact.

Visiting
The visitor centre is open to the public in Charlestown of Aberlour. Two tour formats are offered: the standard Aberlour Experience (guided tour with tasting, approximately 1¾ hours) and the Founders' Tour (in-depth premium experience including new-make spirit at different maturation stages, for groups of up to six). Online booking is strongly recommended as group sizes are intentionally small. A physical shop and online shop are both available.
