Aberargie Distillery is a family-owned, field-to-bottle operation built by Morrison & Mackay on the Stirling family's 300-acre farm in Perthshire, East Scotland. Founded in 2017, it grows 100% of its Golden Promise barley on site and uses water drawn from the estate. The distillery was conceived as a return to roots for the Morrison family, whose connection to Scotch whisky stretches back to the 1960s. It sits at Kincardine House, Aberargie, approximately 30 kilometres from Morrison & Mackay's blending and bottling plant in Bankfoot. The inaugural single malt release launched globally on 3 March 2026, priced at £65.

History

Stanley P. Morrison acquired Bowmore Distillery in the 1960s, building it into Morrison Bowmore Distillers — a portfolio that eventually included Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch. That business was sold to Suntory in 1994. In 2005, Stanley's son Brian and grandson Jamie secured a majority stake in the Scottish Liqueur Centre in Bankfoot, Perthshire, renaming the enterprise Morrison & Mackay. Under Jamie's leadership, they revived the Old Perth blended malt in 2014 and began planning a new distillery on the family's agricultural land at Aberargie.

Ground was broken in June 2016. The first cask was filled on 1 November 2017, beginning the long maturation needed to qualify the spirit as single malt Scotch whisky. After more than eight years of maturation, the Aberargie Single Malt was made available globally from 3 March 2026 — the culmination of the Morrison family's ambition to control every stage of production from barley seed to bottled expression.

Production

Aberargie is a genuine single-estate operation: all barley — specifically Golden Promise, a heritage variety prized for its waxiness and flavour — is grown on the adjacent farm and malted on site. Water comes from estate sources. Annual production capacity is approximately 750,000 litres of pure alcohol. The distillery distils both peated and unpeated spirit, with fruity qualities developed through careful still management. Maturation takes place in casks warehoused on site. The wider Morrison & Mackay portfolio of blending, bottling, and independent releases operates from the Bankfoot facility 30 km away.

Tasting Character

The house style is shaped by Golden Promise barley, which imparts an inherent waxiness and richness to the new-make spirit. The distillery is set up to develop fruity, expressive qualities — a counterpoint to the lighter, grassier profiles often associated with east-coast operations. Occasional peated runs add a smoky dimension to selected casks. The first commercially released single malt reflects eight-plus years of maturation in a combination of cask types, with waxy barley character, orchard fruits, and gentle spice expected to define the Aberargie signature.
