Aber Falls Distillery
Aber Falls Distillery sits in the foothills of Snowdonia National Park in North Wales, taking its name from the dramatic Aber Falls waterfall — known in Welsh as Rhaeadr Fawr — close by. Opened in 2017 in the village of Abergwyngregyn (Station Road, LL33 0LB), it was the first whisky distillery in North Wales since the early 1900s and is only the second Welsh single malt producer after Penderyn Distillery in South Wales. The distillery is owned by Halewood Artisanal Spirits PLC and produces spirits across multiple categories: single malt whisky, rye whisky, gin, vodka, and cream liqueurs.
The surrounding landscape is intrinsic to the operation. Water flows from the Carneddau mountain range — the same source that feeds the famous waterfall — while barley is sourced locally from Welsh farms. Excess draff from production is repurposed as livestock feed on nearby farms, reflecting the distillery's commitment to the local rural economy.

History
Aber Falls was established in 2017 to capitalise on the exceptionally pure water flowing from the Carneddau mountains and to position North Wales as a credible whisky-producing region. It was the first Welsh whisky distillery in over a century, joining Penderyn as the second operating in Wales. Wales is now home to seven distilleries, but Aber Falls remains the flag-bearer for the north of the country.
The operation was founded under and remains owned by Halewood Artisanal Spirits PLC — a company registered in England and Wales — which also has interests in wines, beers, and other spirits. Following a mandatory minimum three-year maturation of new-make spirit filled in 2017, the distillery released its first Single Malt expression in May 2021. An Aber 6 Year Old Rye expression was announced for release on 28 February 2025, underlining the distillery's commitment to aged expressions.
Production
Water is drawn from springs in the Carneddau mountain range, the same watershed that feeds Aber Falls waterfall. Barley is locally sourced from Welsh farms, emphasising regional provenance. The distillery produces new-make spirit across whisky, gin, and vodka categories using pot stills. Specific still sizes and total capacity have not been publicly disclosed; the operation is mid-scale by Welsh standards. Maturation takes place in ex-Oloroso sherry casks for the flagship single malt expression.
Tasting Character
The Aber Falls Single Malt is amber-gold in colour and sherry-cask finished. On the nose it presents vanilla, toffee, candied citrus fruits, figs, and sultana with a gentle hint of clove. The palate delivers sweet sherry notes with dried fruit and spice, forest fruit flavours, creamy malt, nuts, dark chocolate, and espresso. The finish is long and lingering with dried fruit and subtle spice. The house style is rich and fruit-forward, leaning into the sherry influence rather than peat — a natural fit for a distillery whose spring water has the gentle minerality of the Welsh uplands.
